Water filter jugs

Good, clean water is essential for life and a good recommendation is to drink 2 to 3 litres (3-5 pints) a day.

One problem is that the water we get out of our taps contains chlorine and other chemicals to keep it safe during storage and transmission but which you don’t really want to be drinking. You can buy bottled water but that has its own problems. Apart from being unsure of the real source, there have been problems with the plastic bottles leaching chemicals and it creates mountains of plastic that have to be disposed of. Plus, water is heavy to carry back from the shop and it is also expensive (often costing more than the petrol for your car!).

Brita filter jug components

A simple and cheap answer is a jug water filter. You just fill it from the tap and the removable filter takes out all of the harmful chemicals leaving you with fresh and clean water to drink.

Our favourite is the BRITA Marella XL Water Filter that uses the BRITA MAXTRA+ Cartridges to helps with the reduction of limescale and chlorine. The jug has a large, countertop design with 2.4 Litre filtered water capacity, featuring a flip lid for easy filling, dishwasher safe except the lid.

The filter cartridges last for a lot longer than they say, so we just ignore the indicator on the jug and go by the taste of the water (of course the manufacturer wants you to believe that the filter cartridge needs replacing early so you have to buy a lot more of them!). But don’t leave it too long or the quality will go down.

We have found it best to use the genuine Brita Maxtra cartridges. There are other cheaper brands available but we think it is worth paying a small amount extra for a known quality standard and they do seem to keep filtering for longer.
